Port Aransas - Mustang Island Update

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - I must confess that I have been remiss in posting updates in recent weeks. With that in mind, here are a few highlights:

The Port Aransas real estate market performed far better than most last year. Total 2009 sales were 8% below 2008 levels. Many of the sales were in new developments such as Cinnamon Shore and Village Walk.
Overall condo and home pricing appears to be flat, but that is in part due to numerous high-end properties that have somewhat skewed the average pricing numbers.
Commercial and residential lot pricing continues to fall and in some cases has returned to 2003 levels.
Local property management companies report early indicators of another very strong year for tourism and vacation rentals.
Our Winter Texan friends are here in great numbers. Unfortunately, we are in the midst of a typical "El Nino" Winter with wet conditions. Alas, it will be hot and sunny in no time.
In 2010 residents and visitors will enjoy the Port Aransas Nature Preserve that opened late last year. The new Port Aransas Skate Park will be opening in a few weeks and will be a popular new addition to our community.
The first big Spring Break Weekend is March 13th (only a few weeks away).

1,200 Acre Port Aransas Nature Preserve

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - What began as an opportunity presented by the Texas General Land Office in 2002 has finally come to fruition. The 1,200 acre Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture is open and offers residents and visitors a new way to explore Mustang Island.

“It’s a chance for people to walk into nature,” said Joan Holt, the University of Texas Marine Science Institute’s director of fisheries and mariculture who helped develop the birding sites in the preserve. “People of any age and ability can get a view of an area not a lot of people could get to before. I think it will be used a lot for enjoying nature and sunsets and, of course, bird watching.”

Port Aransas Course Makes The Golf Digest Top Ten New Course List

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - The January 2010 issue of Golf Digest includes the annual review of the best new public and private courses. The Newport Dunes Golf Course on Mustang Island made the top ten. This news will not come as a surprise to the many golfers that have enjoyed playing a round on the new seaside links masterpiece.

The Enterprise Blog offers more insight on how the Texas economy is outperforming other parts of the country...

New Geography, the online magazine created by Joel Kotkin and others with a special focus on demographics and trends, has been tracking the implosion of California in an interesting way: by comparing it to Texas.

Texas and California are America’s two most populous states, together numbering approximately 55 million people, which is only about 6 million less than the United Kingdom, where I live. California, as everyone knows, has a coolness factor that Texas cannot match. Hollywood, Silicon Valley, and wine. Say no more. But, unless one has been living in a cave, everyone knows that the cool state is also the broke state. If Hollywood turned California’s budget and fiscal position into a movie, it would be a blockbuster horror film indeed.

Texas, on the other hand, is growing, creating wealth, and attracting the entrepreneurial and creative classes that too many people think only go to places like New York and California. Golf Carts Will Keep Cruisin' In Port Aransas

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - Earlier this year the State Legislature passed HB 2553 which stopped TxDOT from continuing the registration of golf carts effective September 1st. The bill allows counties and municipalities to register the vehicles.

In a unanimous vote on Thursday, the Port Aransas City Council passed the third reading of an ordinance which will allow the City to register carts for the continued use of residents and visitors alike. Additional details are in a recent Corpus Christi Caller Times article.

LA Times: Texas Is The New Retirement Mecca

There is a great article in this weekend's edition of the LA Times that further illustrates how Texas is performing better than most in difficult economic times.

"Texas' population, the nation's second largest at about 25 million, is expected to be boosted this year by net inflows of at least 150,000 people from other states, said Karl Eschbach, the state demographer. Seniors are a growing part of that trend, lured by aggressive campaigns from state officials and developers."

Fall Air Has The Red Tide Retreating From Port Aransas Beaches

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - Earlier this week an algal bloom that is commonly referred to as red tide was plaguing portions of the Texas Coast. The National Seashore and northern sections of Padre Island saw the worst of the conditions. On Thursday, the red tide extended to the southernmost section of beach in Port Aransas. As the Corpus Christi Caller Times is reporting, a well-timed cool front arrived and had an immediate impact.

Sunny skies and afternoon highs near 80 degrees are forecast for the next five days.

Overnight Fire Destroys Six Homes In Port Aransas

PORT ARANSAS, Firefighters from Port A and surrounding communities battled winds gusting over 25 mph as six homes were engulfed in flames. Several surrounding properties were severely damaged. The homes were located in the Private Marina Area of town adjacent to the Ship Channel.
