Earlier this week, forecasts from the National Hurricane Center predicted that Ike would make landfall near Port Aransas on the mid Texas coast. At the expense of the Houston, Galveston and the Port Arthur area, Port Aransas was spared. No rain was recorded and the peak wind gusts were below 30 mph. However, the powerful storm did generate a large flood tide 165 miles from landfall. The peak tide measured at the Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas was 5.37 feet above normal (MMSL).
The photos below were taken earlier this morning (09/13). The top photo was taken behind Woody's Sport Center and shows the boat slips behind Trout Street looking towards Virginia's. The second photo was taken at the Island Park Estates dune walkover. The tide was still approximately 3.5 feet above normal. The high tide did cause some significant dune erosion on Mustang Island. Prior to Ike, the dune ridge extended to the mile marker shown in this photo.

Wow. So ya'll got out of it unscathed that's great. We just have high winds right now, zero rain so far. Pretty sure we aren't getting anything either.
Loved the pictures. KM
Dear Keith,
Port A really dodged a bullet. You guys are very lucky to be on the west side of the storm, so your not as affected. I have been watching the Houston news and it is pretty bad there. Count your blessings! Thanks for the photos!

Keith - my family & I were planning on a two week trip to Port A, starting 15th. Would you recommend that we come on down?! Glad to see things look so good.
I mentioned to someone today that "we dodged a bullet" and they corrected me. "We dodged a bomb" as they put it. It is sunny and hot in Port A with some high haze. The tide is still falling out and water is still up on some of the narrow sections of the beach. Everyting should be back to "Port A normal" by Monday. Many businesses are still closed, but should reopen by then. A cool front is also in the forecast and will be welcome.
Keith, I'm glad to see that Port A was spared. I'm planning on coming down at the end of the month to do some redfishing and I'm glad there's still a beach left! It looked like earlier in the week that you were going to get a direct hit.
Thanks for the pictures, we appreciate being able to check on the property. It was hard to find info about the island.
So tickled to find this site! We were also worried about Ike's strike. We'll be in Port A first week of Nov. Our prayers go out to Galveston.....
Hi Keith - Thanks for posting the great photos and giving us an update on "Port A".
