Hurricane Alex Is History As Port Aransas Celebrates The July 4th Weekend

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - Hurricane Alex made landfall in Mexico hundreds of miles from Mustang Island.  High surf, winds and heavy rain have come and gone.  The weather forecast calls for improving conditions through the weekend.

The July 4th Holiday is traditionally a big weekend on the island and this year promises to be no different.  As an added bonus four tall ships will be coming through the jetties Saturday morning as they make their way to former Naval Station Ingleside.  Details on the festivities can be found here.

At approximately "dark thirty" on Sunday night, the Annual Port Aransas Fireworks Display will take place over the harbor and ship channel.  This is always a great show and people return year after year to enjoy the waterfront show.

Even though the hurricane passed well to our south, some travelers altered their plans.  As a result, hotels and condos are reporting vacancies.  This is a rare opportunity for last minute travel plans as we celebrate in Port Aransas.

Port Aransas Oil Spill? So Far, So Good

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - Hotels, condos and local businesses are reporting that callers are asking if the oil spill has impacted the beach and surrounding waters in Port Aransas.  To quote the TravelTex website, "Currently, there are no impacts to the Texas' 624 miles of coastline.  Our beaches are not affected, and are open for business."

Having said that, I hope they stop the leak ASAP and spare the Gulf Coast States additional damage.

Cybergolf: Great Golf In Port Aransas

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - The Newport Dunes Golf Course has been open for over a year and has been a popular addition to our community.  Cybergolf.com has just published a a great review of the course.

"It's also the perfect spot for a true links-style course, a vision that Arnold Palmer Design Group turned into reality with Newport Dunes Golf Club. Weighing in at 6,821 wind-swept yards from the tips, the par-71 track meanders through sweeping, untamed native dunes and offers spectacular views of both the Gulf of Mexico and Corpus Christi Bay."
